Gowanagus

It has been nigh on 22 years since we touched down on the shores of Brooklyn, 15 since we started working on the Brooklyn Lyceum(aka Public Bath #7), and 12 years since theater first appeared between its walls.  We have learned many things from nearly 100 productions. Foremost is that Brooklyn needs its own Broadway of long running well-produced theater. Gowanagus is here to start that ball rolling.

Gowanagus is the Brooklyn Lyceum's open run initiative: an endless mission to bring theater, dance and the audiences that follow them to the borough of Kings.

Beginning in Fall 2011, the Brooklyn Lyceum will produce a continuing stream of curated performance work and in-house productions. Each production will run for a minimum of a six weeks and, if warranted, extend indefinitely.

The process: Once a month the Lyceum will host auditions of pieces done by established theater and dance groups from Brooklyn and beyond. These pieces can be in development, but must meet certain criteria of completeness: substantively off-book, minimal self -sufficient tech, etc. The curatorial team (a mix of Lyceum directors, staff and the general public) will select work for development from these auditions. Once selected for development the prospective group will need to meet certain pre-production criteria. If the pre-production criteria are met the production is placed in a holding queue. Every time a theater production ends a new production will be selected from the queue. Each production will be scheduled for 6 weeks. After 3 weeks it will be decided whether or not to extend the run. If not extended , the group will still be able to finish out its run. Once an end dates for a run has been set, another work, having met the its own pre-production criteria, will be selected to begin its run 5 weeks hence.
